This was my mother’s favourite saying as she got older and saw the succeeding generations make their way in the world. Life was quite a long business for her as she lived to be eighty nine. Having been born before the outbreak of the first World War she lived to see the turn of the twenty first century and the birth of two of her great grandchildren. She also traveled much further in distance and experience than she can have dreamed of in her childhood in Carlisle. I shared part of that journey with her and am now journeying on myself into that phase of life known as ‘old age’ – the twilight zone – or as I may have still a long way to go – a time of – well – let’s see!
One of my plans for my future, without the constraints of paid work, is to indulge in some autoethnographical work – no, not an autobiography – a social research based exploration of aspects of my life and interests using my own experiences and reflections alongside some of my own research. I hope that this blog will be one place where I can do some of that ‘lifework’
